A compass is a navigational instrument that shows directions in a fixed frame of reference that is stationary relative to the planet's electromagnetic field. The frame of reference defines the four cardinal directions (or points): north, south, east, and west. Intermediate directions (NE, SW, etc.) are also defined.
Usually, a diagram called a compass rose, which shows the directions (with their names usually abbreviated to initials), is marked on the compass. When the compass is in use, the rose is aligned with the directions in the frame of reference, so, for example, the "N" mark on the rose really points to the north.
The compass used in the Frontier commonly includes a simple, yet functional sextant useful for stellar and solar navigation and navigation in planets lacking a stable or significant magnetic north.
A compass is commonly included in emergency survival kits.
A compass costs 10 Cr and has negligible encumbrance.

- ↑ The magnetic field of a planet does not always align with it's axis of rotation. Thus magnetic North and "true" North are not always the same. Furthermore, a planet's magnetic field can shift over long periods of time, or even invert.
