UPF Spacefleet formation

The UPF Spacefleet was formed after the First Sathar War, to defend the four Core Races of the Frontier from all external foes. The fleet has been equipped with a series of fast and modern ships, the mightiest of which are the three battleships: UPFS Admiral Clinton, UPFS Admiral Morgaine and UPFS Admiral Harsevoort.

Fleet Organization[]

Each of the three battleships is the flagship of a fleet task force. Task Force Cassidine (flagship: UPFS Admiral Harsevoort) is centered at Triad; Task Force Prenglar (flagship: UPFS Admiral Morgaine) is based at the UPF base orbiting Morgaine's World; and Strike Force NOVA (flagship: UPFS Admiral Clinton) has a home base at Gran Quivera, but spends much time patrolling the travel lanes of the Frontier.

In addition, there are a number of non-attached ships in Spacefleet.

Many smaller strike forces and patrol groups are active throughout the Frontier. The composition of these task forces does not remain constant, as ships are often reassigned from one group to the other. The patrol groups usually consist of one or two assault scouts and a Frigate. Small strike forces often contain several Frigates, a destroyer, and a light cruiser.

Rank Organization[]

Officer Ranks (original SFKH game)[]

Spacefleet officers receive their training at Gollwin Academy. After graduation, the newly-commissioned officers must serve a minimum of six years active duty in Spacefleet.

Command

A Dralasite admiral and her staff conduct fleet maneuver planning at the CIC table.

Fleet Admiral (FAdm.)

The Fleet Admiral is the supreme commander of the UPF Spacefleet: the highest rank in the military organization, only one individual holds this position at any given time.
As a staff officer, the Fleet Admiral does not command from a ship, but from fleet headquarters on Prenglar. The role of the Fleet Admiral is to plan long-term strategies with the other Admirals of Starfleet. For the most part, this is a political position; nobody becomes Fleet Admiral without approval by the Council of Worlds
Daily pay is 500 credits.

Admiral (Adm.)

An Admiral is a flag officer who commands an entire task force or orbiting fortress. When assigned to a Task Force, Admirals command from a flagship - typically a Battleship, otherwise, they command from the CIC in their assigned Fortress.
Seven individuals hold the rank of Admiral at the time of the Second Sathar War; their commands are: UPFB Fortress Kdikit (Madderly's Star), UPFB Fortress Redoubt (Clarion, White Light), UPFB Fortress Gollwin (Morgaine's World, Prenglar), UPFB Fortress Pale (Truane's Star), Task Force Cassidine, Task Force Prenglar, and Strike Force NOVA.
Daily pay is 400 credits.

Rear Admiral (RAdm.)

Rear Admirals are commonly seen as the executive officers (XO) of a task force, usually operating from the second biggest ship within their fleet; usually an Assault Carrier or Heavy Cruiser), or as staff officers in command major departments within Spacefleet Administration.
Daily pay is 350 credits.

Commodore (Cdre.)

Commodores are the lowest grade of Flag Officer in Spacefleet. Commodores with field commands lead small strike forces from a Light or Heavy Cruiser, while staff officers would command departments or sub-divisions within Spacefleet Administration.
Daily pay is 300 credits.

Space Commander (SCmdr.)

The equivalent of a Navy Captain (and informally addressed as such), Space Commanders command ships larger than destroyers; Cruisers, Carriers, and Battleships. Note that while Flag officers command fleets and task forces, even their flagships are commanded by Space Commanders.
Space Commanders may also lead Destroyer Squadrons or flotillas of lesser ships.
Staff officers of this rank often lead minor departments within Spacefleet Administration and serve as aides to flag officers.
Daily pay is 250 credits.

Commander (Cmdr.)

Commanders often serve as commanding officers (CO) of Destroyers or Patrol Groups. Aboard larger ships, they often serve as XO’s or department heads.
Staff officers of this rank often serve as departmental aides and as liaisons with planetary governments and militias.
Daily pay is 180 credits.

Fleet Lieutenant (FLt.)

Fleet Lieutenants are typically assigned to command Frigates, XO’s in Destroyers or department heads in line warships. They are also commonly seen as Fighter Squadron commanders.
Daily pay is 140 credits.

Lieutenant (Lt.)

Lieutenants command Scout-class vessels and small craft. They are also commonly seen as XO’s aboard Frigates (and sometimes Destroyers). Most line fighter pilots hold this rank.
Daily pay is 100 credits.

Junior Lieutenant (Jr. Lt.)

Graduates of Gollwin Academy serve their first tour of duty as Junior Lieutenants. “Jellies” can be seen serving in almost every function in Spacefleet as they continue their training in their chosen field of expertise.
Though often seen as fighter pilots, Junior Lieutenants are rarely given responsibility over any other form of craft.
Daily pay is 75 credits.

Intermediate and Enlisted Ranks[]

Although the officers of the Spacefleet represent some of the finest individuals in the Frontier, the same cannot be said for the crews of Spacefleet ships.

The enlisted members of the fleet come from all walks of life. The fleet always is short of crew members, so the requirements for enlistment are not rigorous. No checking is done regarding a crew member's background or abilities; consequently, a great amount of galactic riffraff has found a home in the crew's quarters of Spacefleet vessels.

Many of these crews become fine fighting units; the combat record of the Spacefleet is impressive. Occasionally, however, a charismatic bully will win the respect - or inspire the fear - of his mates to the point of inciting a mutiny. More than one Spacefleet vessel has dumped its officers into space, and disappeared to the fringes of the Frontier, to embark on a career of piracy and plunder.

Warrant Officer Ranks[]

Considered "Intermediate Enlisted Ranks", Warrant Officers are enlistees with spaceship skill certification (piloting, astrogation, engineering, or gunnery) who pass background checks.

Chief Warrant Officer (CWO)

Experienced Warrant Officers with more experience and authority. Commonly career personnel with many years of experience.

Warrant Officer (WO)

They are enlisted personnel with skills needed to run a spaceship, but without the same level of authority or responsibility given to officers.
Dedicated shuttle pilots may hold this rank, provided they hold Shuttle Pilot certification (Technician Level 6).
Several sub-grades of WO exist (WO1-WO6) for daily pay purposes.

Non-Commissioned Officers[]

Chief Petty Officer (CPO)

Chief Petty Officers are the most senior enlisted personnel of Spacefleet, with many years of distinguished service; they are highly skilled in their field, and highly respected. They are usually in charge of a ship’s or station's security or technical department, under the command of a more senior officer - acting as an intermediate between the officer and enlisted personnel.
Much like Petty Officers, CPOs who meet academy requirements may apply to attend Gollwin Academy to be commissioned as an officer, forgoing the interview requirement with a letter of recommendation from his or her commanding officer, who arranges transport to the academy at Spacefleet's expense. Few choose to apply for officer positions, since it usually involves a salary reduction.
Several sub-grades of CPO exist (CPO1-CPO6) for daily pay purposes.

Petty Officer (PO)

Petty Officers are the non-commissioned officers (NCO’s) of enlisted personnel. They are skilled in their field, but they do not have the sort of skills needed to run a ship.
Petty Officers are often placed under the command of a Junior Lieutenant, so the young officer would learn from their experience, and Crewmen usually respect an NCO more than a young officer.
Petty Officers who meet academy requirements may apply to attend Gollwin Academy to be commissioned as an officer, forgoing the interview requirement with a letter of recommendation from his or her commanding officer, who arranges transport to the academy at Spacefleet's expense.

Enlisted Ranks[]

Specialist (SP)

Specialists are enlisted personnel with qualified certification in a skill. Though the rank is commonly believed to be a different name for Crewmen, able bodies are not listed as having a recognized PSA certification, while Specialists do.
Daily pay is based on the Specialist's primary skill certification (Technical, Biosocial, Other) and skill qualification level (1-6).

Crewman (CM)

Crewmen (also known as "Able bodies") are the basic enlisted personnel of Spacefleet. They make up the technicians, security, staffers and marines within a ship or base.
Crewmen have a fixed pay grade scale based on years of service.

Crewman Apprentice (CA)

Crewmen Apprentices are the inexperienced enlisted trainees of Spacefleet. They are at a stage of learning and hands-on training to become full-fledged Crewmen, so they are given no responsibility, and require supervision.
Crewmen Apprentices receive a flat pay rate of 20 Cr/day until they receive their able crewman certification.
